Freddie Gray case: Verdict expected Monday after Thursday closing arguments in Officer Nero trial
    May 18, 2016

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

Defense attorneys for Officer Edward Nero closed out their presentation Wednesday, calling to the stand another expert to testify about police procedures and an officer who was present during Freddie Gray's arrest and given immunity from prosecution by the state.

Capt. Justin Reynolds, a former director of training for the Baltimore Police Department, testified that there was "no possible way" to put a seat belt on detainees in the back of police arrest vans without compromising an officer's safety. He said the wagons have "spaghetti-like" straps that require two hands to fasten.

Earlier, the prosecution had called a police trainer who demonstrated on Deputy Chief State's Attorney Janice Bledsoe how to belt an arrestee, using one of his arms to block Bledsoe while using the other to fasten the seat belt. Reynolds testified that the trainer had demonstrated how to secure an arrestee in a police cruiser - not a van.

Nero is charged with reckless endangerment and misconduct for not securing Gray in a seat belt.

Testimony concluded Wednesday morning, with closing arguments slated for Thursday. As Nero has selected a bench trial rather than a jury trial, Circuit Judge Barry G. Williams alone will decide Nero's fate on the four charges he faces related to Gray's initial stop and detention and his placement in the back of a police transport van with shackles but no seat belt.

    Ruling expected today
Judge Barry G. Williams is scheduled to issue a ruling Monday in the case of Officer Edward Nero, one of six Baltimore police officers charged in the arrest and death of Freddie Gray. Nero, 30, is charged with second-degree assault, reckless endangerment and two counts of misconduct in office, all related to his role in Gray's initial detention and arrest on April 12, 2015.

Nero has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Gray, 25, suffered severe spinal cord injuries while in the back of a Baltimore police van, prosecutors say. He died a week later.

Williams is expected to hand down his ruling at 10:30 a.m.

Freddie Gray case: Officer Nero found not guilty of all charges
    May 23, 2016 11:00AM

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

Baltimore Circuit Judge Barry Williams on Monday acquitted Officer Edward Nero of all counts for his role in the arrest and death of Freddie Gray.

The judgment, following a five-day bench trial, is the first in the closely-watched case. Nero, 30, faced four misdemeanor charges of second-degree assault, reckless endangerment and two counts of misconduct in office.
Prosecutors had argued that Nero committed an assault by detaining Gray without justification, while the reckless endangerment charge related to Nero's role in putting Gray into an arrest wagon without buckling a seat belt. In closing arguments Thursday, Williams had skeptically questioned prosecutors about their theory of assault, which legal experts said was unprecedented.

Nero leaned forward after the verdict was read, and wiped his eyes. He hugged his attorneys.
