Cane toad sausages on menu for WA native wildlife.

Scientists in Western Australia are hoping ‘cane toad sausages’ fed to native animals will be so repulsive that endangered species will avoid the lethal amphibians.
The program is being launched in the state’s northern Kimberley region and members of the Kununurra community are being asked to collect cane toads for their meat.

Oh my! They're poison??? So they have no natural predators?

Why is the hell would they want to make people food out of them?

    No predators except for humans.
I think the idea is to make sausages without the poison in them, get the other wildlife to realise that they taste yuck and they wont try to eat them.

As part of a trial teaching native animals not to eat toxic cane toads, the Department of Parks and Wildlife is seeking the assistance of Kununurra residents to collect toads for the production of taste aversion sausages.
Parks and Wildlife cane toad program coordinator Corrin Everitt said research showed that feeding small cane toads to native predators such as floodplain goannas or giving northern quolls toad mince sausages containing a nausea-inducing salt, made them feel sick.
“This experience leads to these predators avoiding toads when they subsequently encounter them,” she said.

Aargh! Guess I should have read the article.

I still won't ever eat any kind of frog, though - or rabbit.

Too bad this wasn't thought out properly when the toad introduction began. I read that they didn't help much with protecting sugarcane fields.

Never should have brought the sugarcane to Oz either.

You guys have some VERY LARGE invasive species!

    Water buffalo, camel, horses, goats...

I guess almost everything the non-aboriginal brought there was invasive and destructive to the natural flora & fauna.

    Ive..never..been..close..enough..to...one..to...ki ll...it.
There..is no...real..way..to deter...them,just keep an eye out for them and if one comes into your yard it is best to kill it even though they are a protected species.
