Sherri Papini Will 'Have to Find a New Normal' After Abduction, Elizabeth Smart Says

Sherri Papini Will 'Have to Find a New Normal' After Abduction, Elizabeth Smart Says

The husband of Sherri Papini, the California mom who mysteriously vanished earlier this month, has described the brutal condition she was in the first time he saw her after she was released by her captors on Thanksgiving Day.

“My first sight was my wife in a hospital bed. Her face covered in bruises ranging from yellow to black because of her repeated beatings. The bridge of her nose broken,” Keith Papini told Good Morning America in a statement.

He added that when he reunited with Papini, she weighed only 87 lbs. and her long, blonde hair had been chopped off. He told GMA that Sherri had been thrown from a vehicle with a chain around her waist – which was also attached to her wrists – and a bag over her head.
Sherri Papini’s astonishing and emotional story of being found on Thanksgiving morning on the side of the road after authorities say she was kidnapped and tormented for three weeks is one that kidnapping survivor Elizabeth Smart can identify with.

Smart, now 29-years-old, married and an advocate for victims of abuse, was just 14 when she was abducted from her Salt Lake City home and held captive for nine months. Weighing in on Papini’s ordeal, she told ABC News that the California mom will have to create a whole new sense of normal for herself in order to heal.
Smart explained what kept her going during her own ordeal.

“I found my one thing that I could hold onto no matter what that my captors couldn’t take away or change, was my family,” she said. “And I imagine the same would be true for Sherri. I would imagine that she held onto them. She survived for them.”

Longtime victims' advocate John Walsh, the former host of “America’s Most Wanted” and co-founder of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, also weighed in on the case and the road to recovery.

“It’s a desensitizing, mind-breaking experience,” he said. “People have to be patient. Be patient with these victims because they’ve been through hell.”

    Smart had some additional advice.
Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko confirmed the injuries to GMA, but said investigators have not determined whether Papini was “thrown” from the vehicle.

Papini, a mother of two, was abducted as she went for a routine jog on November 2. Authorities and her family searched for her for weeks and her husband went on GMA to plead for her return.

Much more of Sherri Papini's story, including ABC News’ exclusive interview with her husband, will air in a special edition of "20/20" tonight at 10 p.m. ET.

Truly horrific, her abductors beat, kicked, starved and branded her, hopefully Mrs. Papini will recover physically and emotionally one day.

Praying for her and her family.

Sherri Papini and Her Family Focus on Future: ‘It’s Something We’re Never Going to Forget’

    Updated December 3, 2016 at 8:38am EST

Life is understandably scary now for Sherri Papini, the California mom who in early November, mysteriously vanished for 22 days after she left her home for a routine jog before appearing Thanksgiving morning on the side of a road chained, beaten and branded.

“When lights are off, when doors shut, when she hears certain sounds, I mean it’s something that I don’t know how to deal with, and we’ll need somebody who can help her through that from a professional standpoint,” her husband, Keith, said in an interview with 20/20‘s Matt Gutman that aired Friday night.

“It’s not just a long road, it’s something we’re never going to forget,” Keith said.

Sherri, Keith, and their children Tyler, 4, and Violet, 2, now live in a secret location to safeguard Sherri’s privacy and to promote her healing, according to the show.

Police are searching for two Hispanic women, armed with a handgun and driving a dark SUV, according to Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko.

It makes sense to Keith that Sherri’s kidnappers are female. “If a vehicle pulled up with big dudes in it, would you approach that vehicle?” Keith shared.

    December 2nd, 2016 - VIDEO

More details are surfacing about the kidnapping of California mom Sherri Papini. Sherri Papini’s Husband Keith Recalls First Call From His Wife After Her Release: She Was 'Screaming'

    December 2, 2016 @ 1:33 PM

Sherri Papini’s husband, Keith Papini, recalls, in his first sit-down interview with ABC News’ 20/20 on Friday, December 2, getting the call from a California Highway Patrol officer and his wife after [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

In a sneak preview of the interview, Keith tells ABC News’ Matt Gutman that he could hear his wife "screaming in the background, yelling my name."

As previously reported, Sherri was abducted while on a jog in Redding, California, on November 2. After she failed to pick up her two kids at daycare and return home that day, Keith alerted the police. She was found on Thanksgiving Day on a highway 150 miles south of their home. Also previously reported, Keith revealed Sherri was badly bruised, had her hair cut off and was "branded" by her captors. In a statement to police, Sherri described her captors as two Hispanic women.

Keith told Gutman their first phone call was obviously "very emotional."

What’s Next for Sherri Papini — with Her Alleged Abductors Still on the Run?
    December 7, 2016 at 11:00am EST

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

Sherri Papini, the mom-of-two who authorities say was kidnapped and held captive for 22 days, is living at an undisclosed location and reportedly may never return to her home near the trail in Redding, California, where she was abducted while jogging on Nov. 2.

That doesn’t surprise John Kelly, a noted serial killer profiler.

“This is going to take an awful lot of therapy, an anti-depressant, probably anti-anxiety medication,” he tells PEOPLE. “It will be very hard for her to navigate these traumatic waters.”

“It’s only by an act of God that they let her go,” Kelly says. “I have a hard time understanding that as sadistic as these [people] are — and I’ve hunted many of them — would let someone live.”

Though no arrests have been made, investigators continue their pursuit of anyone connected to Papini’s abduction. Authorities have reportedly said there is not yet enough evidence to officially rule anyone out as a suspect.

“She can identify this perpetrator,” Kelly tells PEOPLE. As he explains, “If they know where she lives, she will always worry.”
Papini was found on the side of a highway Thanksgiving morning 150 miles from her home. Her husband and officials have said she was beaten, branded and chained, her long blonde hair chopped off.

She told police she was abducted by two armed Hispanic women — one with curly hair, one with straight hair — who covered their faces and spoke mostly Spanish.

The Shady Hostage Negotiator at the Center of Sherri Papini’s Abduction

Cameron Gamble came out of nowhere, supposedly at the request of an anonymous donor, to find a vanished woman. He’s not the expert he claims to be.

    12.05.16 12:13 AM ET

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

The only thing almost as mysterious as Sherri Papini’s disappearance was the hostage negotiator supposedly retained by an anonymous donor to find her.

Her hair had been cut short, and a message reportedly branded onto her body, but after a quick stint in the hospital, she was released in stable condition. Papini was home.

Information on suspects is vague. Papini told police she had been kidnapped by two Hispanic women with a gun and a dark SUV. The women hid their faces and often kept Papini blindfolded, she claimed. The alleged abductors’ motives are unclear; they did not ransom her or kill her. Papini said she was thrown from the SUV, her arms in shackles on Thanksgiving morning.

For years, Gamble sold anti-abduction courses, touting his alleged military training. Gamble advertised himself as a specialist in kidnapping-prevention training, although his actual record in that field, and as a hostage negotiator, is vague at best. According to military service records, he enlisted in the Air Force 2002 and was discharged in July 2005. He was a Senior Airman when he was discharged, a rank just above Airman First Class, assigned to work as a vehicle operations apprentice. The Air Force could not provide the terms of his discharge, but bankruptcy filings show he received disability benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

He often cites his Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape training in online biographies, and the Air Force confirmed that he has completed a Combat Survival Training Course—as do all aircrew members. He also claims to have trained special forces soldiers at Fort Rucker in Alabama, but the Army post did not respond to requests by The Daily Beast to confirm Gamble’s claim.

After leaving the Air Force, Gamble founded multiple companies with military-sounding names including the Catalyst Advanced Training Group and Project TAKEN.

The Catalyst Strategic Group targeted law enforcement with its sales pitch. In one video, he claimed to provide trainings on non-coercive interrogation techniques to state, local, and federal law enforcement when “the Department of Defense mandated all interrogations be conducted in an ethical, non-coercive manner” after revelations of torture at Abu Ghraib. (DoD regulations are not known to affect state or local law enforcement.)

Papini, a 34-year-old California mother of two disappeared during a November 2 jog, setting off a national media firestorm. Pleas for her safe return went

unanswered. Then Cameron Gamble entered the case. Gamble, a 30-something self-professed abduction expert, said he had the backing of an anonymous donor offering $50,000 in exchange for Papini’s safe return. Gamble described himself as a professional hostage negotiator, and the possible key to Papini’s release.

But Gamble is no expert. Instead, his resume suggests an obscure self-defense coach, who appears to have inserted himself in a woman’s disappearance to parlay it into fame and fortune.

Gamble made his first appearance in the Papini on November 18, more than two weeks after she disappeared, when he uploaded a video to YouTube.

“My name is Cameron Gamble and I’m an international kidnap and ransom consultant,” he said, sitting in a red desk chair against a white wall. “I’ve been retained by an individual who wishes to remain anonymous, an individual who has come forward to offer a cash reward for a ransom for Sherri Papini’s safe return to her family.”
Gamble’s backer, an anonymous donor who offered at least $50,000 cash for Papini’s return, also sang his praises.

“My hired negotiator has negotiated hostage releases all over the world, so he will determine immediately if you are lying,” the person cautioned would-be scammers on his website SherriPapini.com.

The mysterious person, who set up a number on a burner phone, claimed to be from outside the Shasta County area. “Once I leave town this offer is off the table,” he wrote on the website.

The donor’s website offered a chilly message to police: “A note to Redding Police and Shasta County Sheriff’s department. Please don’t threaten me. I have received legal counsel and what I am doing is within my rights.”

Despite the fact that no ransom had been demanded and law enforcement was still actively pursuing leads, Gamble appeared in a number of televised interviews, offering supposed abductors a pathway to a large cash sum in exchange for Papini’s safe return, no questions asked.

While Gamble was working on the donor’s behalf, he was also planning his own future. Records show that he registered CameronGamble.com on November 20, while Papini was still missing

I find this whole thing shady, sorry. Her husband said she would be home for Thanksgiving and she was "released" on Thanksgiving day.

I read last night that her husband is not ruled out as a suspect even though he passed a lie detector test.

I found this article by Nancy Grace another strange oddity in this story>???

Kidnapped California supermom and her family abruptly flee their family home - leaving their dogs behind - as cops hunt for hispanic women who snatched her
Sherri Papini, 34, and her family have fled their Redding, California home
According to one neighbor they are living up north with 'wealthy relatives'
'I don’t think they’re ever coming back here again,' said another neighbor
The family left behind their two dogs, who are being walked daily by one of husband Keith's friends
It has now been almost two weeks since Sherri was found safe after being held captive for 22 days
Investigators are still looking into the case to try and figure out what happened to the month of two
She has told police that two Hispanic women kidnapped here, but police have still been unable to locate her captors

Sherri Papini and her family have left their home in Redding, California and moved to an undisclosed location in the wake of her abduction.

In an interview with ABC News Sherri Papini's husband revealed that it was too difficult for his wife to be at the home given what happened to her in the 22 days that she was held captive, and that he was not sure that they would ever return to the house.

Keith said this while being interviewed for an episode of 20/20 that was aired last Friday, and conducted at a secret location.

Meanwhile, the family decided to also leave their dogs behind when they skipped town.

A friend of Keith's was spotted at the Papini's house on Saturday by the New York Post and said he was there to walk the family's two dogs while they were away.

'I don’t think they’re ever coming back here again,' said one neighbor.

Another neighbor meanwhile said that the couple and their two children were 'way up north' with 'wealthy relatives.'

The Shasta County Sheriff's Department is still looking for clues to determine why Sherri was targeted and the motive of her kidnappers in their ongoing investigation.

Bill Garcia, a private detective who has been looking into the case, said in an interview with Today last week that he believes that Sherri may have been sex trafficking victim.

'I suspect based on the types of injuries Sherri incurred, the beatings, the broken nose, the cut hair, especially the chains and the branding, indicate that most likely it was one of these sex trafficking groups,' said Garcia.

When asked about sex trafficking being a possible motive Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko would only say: 'We don't know if this was related to any cartel or sex trafficking.'

Sheriff Bosenko told DailyMail.com on Wednesday: 'Right now we have no known reason why she was abducted, we do not know if she was specifically targeted or if this was a random abduction

'It's still an active and ongoing investigation and we're still looking for the reasons or the motive for this abduction.

'Abductions are generally rare, especially in this area, but I mean in general an adult abduction is an unusual occurrence.'

He also spoke about the fact that Sherri's captors branded her with some sort of message, which neither he nor her husband Keith with share details about.

'I would think that that was some sort of either an exertion of power and control and or maybe some type of message that the brand contained,' said Sheriff Bosenko earlier this week.

'It is not a symbol, but it was a message.'

Keith previously revealed that his wife's captors kept her in restraints at all times, whether she was inside the house or out with them in a vehicle.

'She had a metal chain around her waist. She had a bag over her head,' said Keith.

'She was chained anytime she was in a vehicle. They opened the door... they cut something, freed her restraints that were holding her in the vehicle and they pushed her out.'

    Shady indeed.

I find the "ransom" turned into "info reward" to be suspicious - right after she is sighted. I think that was really her.

I'm still leery of this whole story. Maybe parts are true, maybe not? IMO, we are, at the very least, missing a whole lot of info. Or this was some kind of sick hoax from the get-go.

I have thought this was hinky from the start and I am only getting more sure it is. they should be charged for the entire search once there is evidence they staged it. If there is.

    well, bless her heart:

"...The newspaper uncovered documents from 13 years ago outlining how Papini's mother, Loretta Graeff, called police asking for help after her daughter was allegedly self-harming and trying to blame the wounds on her.

The incident report, filed in December 2003, is just two lines long and reads: 'RP states her 21y/o daughter that was living with her was harming herself and blaming it on the RP.

'RP states female is coming back to live with them and she wants advice.'..."

"...The newspaper also found two other incidents involving Papini, where her father and sister both claimed she damaged their property.

In 2000, Richard Graeff said his daughter 'burglarized his residence,' before Sheila Koester, 'alleged her back door had been kicked in and she believed Papini was the suspect', the Bee reports. ..."

EXCLUSIVE: California supermom Sherri Papini is living as a recluse eight months after she was 'kidnapped' while jogging' - as investigators refute critics who say she made it all up

    July 24, 2017

The California 'supermom' who disappeared for three weeks last November after allegedly being kidnapped by sex traffickers is now a virtual recluse who is 'trying to put her life back together'.

The disappearance of the pretty blonde wife of Keith Papini, 33, and mother to Tyler, five, and Violet, three, sparked one of the largest manhunts in California history.

Investigators looking into the case have told DailyMail.com that they are still having no news on the case but continue working on the assumption that Papini was kidnapped.

Since returning to her $128,000 family home in Shasta Lake, California, Papini has lived a reclusive existence, with father-in-law Kenneth, 63, saying she is now battling to pick up the pieces of her life.

Speaking exclusively to DailyMail.com, he said: 'It's been hard for them and they're trying to put their lives back together.

'She talks to the Sheriff and she's told him everything that she knows [about her kidnapping].' But he added: 'Even we don't know everything.'

Another family source who asked not to be identified said the couple 'have been through enough'.

He said: 'They've been through a lot. They've been through more than enough already. But they will be OK.'

Neighbors living close to Papini's home, which was purchased by the couple in April this year, say the mother-of-two is rarely seen and does not interact with people living nearby.

They also said she no longer jogs but insisted that it was unusual to see her running even before the apparent kidnapping.

'She's a quiet person,' said Joyce Allison, 77. 'She keeps herself to herself and stays at home with the kids.

'I've been here 12 years and I've never seen her jogging. The only time I've ever spoken to him [Keith] was when she went missing. He came to ask if he could search my yard.'

And it was from the same home that Papini disappeared on November 2, 2016, with the alarm raised after she failed to return from a jog at around 2 p.m. that afternoon.

Police logs obtained by DailyMail.com show the first panicked phone call came in at 5:51 p.m. that day with cops arriving at the property at 6.30 p.m.

A summary of the call made to police by Keith notes: 'Arrived home from work and wife isn't there. Wife also didn't pick up their juvs [children] from school.

'RP [reporting party Keith] found her phone at the end of the driveway, hair in headphones.'

In fact, the phone was discovered a mile away at the intersection of Sunrise Drive and Old Oregon Highway – neatly placed on the ground and with the headphones tidily wrapped around it.

Betty Vaughn, 72, whose home overlooks the spot where Papini was allegedly kidnapped, told DailyMail.com that the discovery was 'strange'.

'The phone was found with the headphones wrapped around it – it was strange, like it had been placed there,' she said.

Asked if Papini was often seen in the area, she said: 'Not at all. I've never seen her jogging, never seen her coming up to the mailboxes.

'I've been living here for 20 years so you would have thought I would have seen her at some point.'

Speaking in December, Sheriff Tom Bosenko confirmed that the phone had been found 'neatly placed' on the ground, telling the Today Show:

'It appeared it had been set in some grass with the screen facing up, and then the earbuds to the phone were loosely coiled and appeared to be placed on the screen.

He added: 'It did somewhat appear to be that it was placed there purposely.'

This case has always been so strange to me. I always wondered if it was the way the LE handled it or who was protecting who? I just could not get a handle on what I thought was the truth.

Many cases are like that to me. Jon Bonet, Kyron Horman and finally some closure on Dylan Redwine.

I'm following the Maura Murray case and that one is puzzling too but I think she's dead but just not found yet. With this one so many people latched on and came up with so much speculation about Maura.

I hope Sherri and her husband find some peace because if they played any part in this how sad. If not I hope they find those people.

    Me too.
I have to say the first one has been/is bugging me.
How it that half face covering staying on with one ear showing, the other not.
A little thing (maybe), but it's irritating my OCD. I've been trying to figure out why one would tie a bandana like that? It just looks weird and awkward. It doesn't look like a bandana either, like the second one.
What did SP tell them to have them draw it up that way?
Just thinking out loud, hoping it won't bug me so much after I get it out.
    Thanks for listening.
