Suspect "Steven Stephens" in Cleveland Facebook killing/Deceased Apparent Suicide

Police cast wide net in search for suspect in Cleveland Facebook killing

    Published April 17, 2017

Residents in four additional states were urged Monday to be on alert for a man accused of killing an elderly passerby at random and then posting the gruesome footage of the murder on Facebook.

Cleveland police warned residents of Pennsylvania, New York, Indiana and Michigan to be on the lookout for Steve Stephens, 37, who they said may have crossed state lines.

Authorities issued an arrest warrant for Stephens early Monday. He is charged with aggravated murder in the death of Robert Godwin.

The video purportedly shows Stephens getting out of his car and targeting Goodwin, 74, who is holding a plastic shopping bag. Stephens shouted the name of a woman, whom Godwin did not recognize.

"She's the reason that this is about to happen to you," Stephens told Godwin before pointing a gun at him. Godwin can be seen shielding his face with the shopping bag. The video of the killing was on the social media site for three hours before it was removed. Stephens account was also removed.

Facebook said the suspect did go live on the social media website at one point during the day, but not during the killing. Police earlier had said that Stephens had broadcast it on Facebook Live.

"This is a horrific crime and we do not allow this kind of content on Facebook," said a company spokesperson. "We work hard to keep a safe environment on Facebook, and are in touch with law enforcement in emergencies when there are direct threats to physical safety."

Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson and police Chief Calvin Williams [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] into authorities. Jackson said Stephens should refrain from doing "any more harm to anybody."

Williams echoed Jackson’s sentiments. He urged Stephens to contact members of his church before hopefully turning himself in, the [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].

"If Steve has an issue, then he needs to talk to some folks to get that resolved," Williams said.

Police said they have been talking with family and friends of Stephens, who is a case manager at Beech Brook, a behavioral health agency headquartered in Pepper Pike, near Cleveland.

"We were shocked and horrified to learn of this news today," agency spokeswoman Nancy Kortemeyer said in a statement. "We are hoping that the Cleveland Police will be able to apprehend Mr. Stephens as soon as possible and before anyone else is injured."

In one of the videos, Stephens can be seen holding up his Beech Brook employee identification badge.

CLEVELAND - A search is underway for a man suspected of shooting and killing an elderly man, then sharing a video of the slaying on Facebook.

Police in Cleveland, Ohio, have issued an aggravated murder warrant for 37-year-old Steve Stephens, who is accused of fatally shooting 74-year-old Robert Godwin Sr. on Sunday in Cleveland.

The video: Stephens recorded himself as the shooting unfolded, police said. The video shows the point-of-view of the shooter as he gets out of a vehicle and approaches an elderly man, later identified as Godwin, walking down the sidewalk carrying a plastic shopping bag.

The shooter says a woman’s name and asks Godwin to repeat it.

“She’s the reason that this is about to happen to you,” the shooter says.

The video then shows a handgun firing.

The victim can be seen lying motionless and bloody on the pavement before the suspect returns to the vehicle.

Other claims of crimes: In another video, Stephens claimed to have killed more than a dozen other people, but police said they have not found evidence of any other victims.

Whereabouts: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] reports that Stephens was last seen south of Interstate 90 in the area of East 93rd in Cleveland.

Police say Stephens, who is considered armed and dangerous, may have left the state and are urging Pennsylvania, New York, Indiana and Michigan residents to be on the lookout. Anyone with information should call 911.

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ] reports that Stephens' most recent documented address was in Euclid, Ohio.

Manhunt in Cleveland After Video of Killing Posted to Facebook

by Alex Johnson, E.D. Cauchi and Tim Stelloh

Cleveland police were still searching Monday for a man who they said filmed himself killing an elderly man, uploaded the video to Facebook and bragged about having committed many other homicides.

The suspect, identified as Steve Stephens, is considered armed and dangerous, police said after the homicide in northeast Cleveland near the Lake Erie shore.

An aggravated murder warrant was issued for Stephens' arrest, and police said early Monday that he may have fled Ohio. The FBI was providing assistance, a spokeswoman told NBC News.

Police initially said Sunday that the man "broadcast the killing on Facebook Live," but a spokesperson for the social media site later said the video was recorded and uploaded. Stevens did use Facebook Live at least once on Sunday, the spokesperson said.

Police said Stephens' claim in one video to have committed multiple other homicides had not been verified. "There are no other victims that we know of," Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams said at a news conference.

Authorities said the killing of the one confirmed victim, Robert Godwin, 74, appeared to be random.

    "It's senseless," Williams said.

There had been no sighting of Stephens since the killing at 2 p.m., Williams said, and it wasn't clear whether he was still in Cleveland. Earlier, students at Cleveland State University, near downtown, were told to shelter in place or stay away from the school.

Williams said alerts had been sent out across the state, and Gov. John Kasich promised the Ohio State Highway Patrol's help.

A series of posts Sunday on what authorities said was Stephens' Facebook page complained that he had "lost everything" to gambling. The posts named specific people whom the user wanted to talk to, and at one point he wrote "I killed 12 people today" and wouldn't stop until he could speak to his mother and a second woman.

Later, the user posted: "I killed 15 today because of [the second woman]." The user called it his "Easter day slaughter."
NBC News archived the posts before the account was removed. "This is a horrific crime and we do not allow this kind of content on Facebook," the company said.

Williams didn't address the details of the Facebook posts, but said: "If Steve has an issue, he needs to talk to folks to get that resolved."

"Steve, I know you have relationships with the clergy out here," Williams added. "I encourage you to call them and turn yourself in."

A longtime friend and fraternity brother of Stephens', Gary Jackson, told NBC News that when they spoke last Thursday, everything seemed fine. They'd even made plans to get together this week.

Jackson, 47, said Stephens mentored foster kids — Beech Brook, a children's mental health center, confirmed his employment — and described him as a quiet guy with a good heart who'd never shown a sliver of aggression.

In Jackon's view, it was Stephens' personal turmoil that spun him out of control.

"I don't think he's killed those 14, 15 people," he said. "From what I know of him that's just him calling out for help."

Jackson added that he sent Stephens a text making sure that his friend knew as much.

"Whatever it is hurting you — you're about to put that pain on somebody else," Jackson said he told Stephens. "That ain't right."

By Sunday night, Jackson hadn't heard back.

Robert Godwin Jr., the victim's son, [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] he couldn't bring himself to watch the disturbing video.

"I haven't even looked at my cellphone or the news," Godwin said. "I don't really want to see it."

Godwin Jr., 48, said he rushed to the scene of the killing after getting a call. "When the detective walked up, she didn't have to open her mouth because her vest said 'homicide,'" he told Cleveland.com.

Search Widens for Man Who Posted Murder on Facebook, Claims He Killed 13 Others

    7:08 am, April 17th, 2017

CLEVELAND (AP) — Police in Ohio urged residents in surrounding states on Monday to be on alert for a man who they said shot and killed an elderly passerby seemingly at random and then posted a gruesome video of the killing on Facebook.

Steve Stephens, 37, was wanted on a charge of aggravated murder in the death of Robert Godwin Sr. in Cleveland.

In a statement early Monday, police warned residents of Pennsylvania, New York, Indiana and Michigan to be on the lookout for Stephens, who they said may have traveled out of state.

In the video, which appears shaky, Stephens gets out of his car and appears to randomly target Godwin, 74, who is holding a plastic shopping bag. Stephens says the name of a woman, whom Godwin does not seem to recognize.

"She’s the reason that this is about to happen to you," Stephens tells Godwin before pointing a gun at him. Godwin can be seen shielding his face with the shopping bag.

Facebook said the suspect did go live on the social media website at one point during the day, but not during the killing. Police earlier had said that Stephens had broadcast it on Facebook Live.

The video of the killing was on Facebook for about three hours before it was removed. Stephens Facebook page also was eventually removed.

"This is a horrific crime and we do not allow this kind of content on Facebook," said a company spokesperson. "We work hard to keep a safe environment on Facebook, and are in touch with law enforcement in emergencies when there are direct threats to physical safety."

The victim’s son, Robert Godwin Jr., told Cleveland.com that he can’t bring himself to watch the video.

"I haven’t watched the video. I haven’t even looked at my cellphone or the news," Godwin said. "I don’t really want to see it."

He said his father, a retired foundry worker, collected aluminum cans and often walked with a plastic shopping bag, picking cans up if he saw them on ground. The son said he believed his father was looking for cans on Sunday when Stephens approached him.

In a separate video posted on Facebook, Stephens claimed to have killed more than a dozen other people.

"Like I said, I killed 13, so I’m working on 14 as we speak," he said.

Police have not verified any other shootings or deaths, Police Chief Calvin Williams said.

"There are no more victims that we know are tied to him," he said.

"I’m killing with my Beech Brook badge on too," he says.
