    We have a local farmers market that does this in the field beside their store. They always have the front row facing the road with tomato plants. They also plant squash and cucumbers and strawberries. They then sell the produce in their store.

    This year she put four plants in the hay bales, it rained, turned really hot and all four died - turned black at the roots.

    That probably would have happened here this year, too! Good to know it works in more moderate weather, though.
