Bear that walks like a human re-emerges in New Jersey

    June 22, 2016

OAK RIDGE, N.J. (AP) - A New Jersey black bear that walks upright on its two hind legs and has become a social media darling has re-emerged and has been captured on video months after its last sighting.

The bipedal bear nicknamed Pedals was spotted in the town of Oak Ridge, NJ.com reported Wednesday ([Only registered and activated users can see links. ]). The bear appeared to be in relatively good health and was moving briskly in a video posted to Facebook featuring the bear. The man who posted the video wrote that he spotted the bear Monday.

Pedals apparently has an injured leg or paw that doesn't allow it to walk comfortably on all fours, according to experts. Prior to the latest video, there had been no reported recent sightings and officials asked the public for help in locating the bear.

Lawrence Hajna, spokesman for the state Department of Environmental Protection, said officials expect the bear to make it through next winter.

"The bear has an indomitable spirit," Hajna said.

The bear first gained fame after it was spotted ambling around neighborhoods and was caught on videos that were posted on social media and shown on national television.

This is the first time I had ever heard of "Pedals".

I agree! Hope he heals or can get some kind of help. I suppose they would have to tranq him, but maybe they should. If his joint is broken it may not mend properly.

Pedals the Upright-Walking Bear Killed in NJ Hunt, Group Say

A group supporting Pedals, New Jersey's famous upright-walking bear, says that the animal was killed during this week's hunt.

In a post to the "Pedals The Injured Bipedal Bear" Facebook page Friday morning, supporters said that a hunter fatally shot the bear with an arrow and bragged about wanting the animal dead for nearly three years. The animal was taken to the Greenpond check station where observers "confirmed it was 'the bi-pedal,'" the group said.

"For the hundreds and thousands of animals lovers who were following his story, I am sorry that we have this sad news to bring to you," supporters said in the post. "PEDALS is at peace now because his beautiful soul left his body when he was killed."

    snipped

Pedals was a familiar site in parts of central New Jersey, and the animal was often seen stomping through backyards and peering into mailboxes at the end of cul-de-sacs. The bear became a social media sensation after it was first spotted more than a year ago.

Supporters had long advocated for Pedals to be placed in a sanctuary in New York state, but New Jersey officials have said they would not allow the bear to be captured and transferred to the facility.
