Slender Man: Morgan Geyser's Mom Begs Court to Toss Confession

"When she thinks back to the reason that she was arrested, it's like looking at another person’s memory," Angie Geyser tells Rolling Stone

    January 17, 2017

Morgan Geyser was a 12-year-old murder suspect when she blankly nodded at Detective Tom Casey, agreeing to sign a piece of paper and waive her Miranda rights. Sitting in a folding chair in a tiny holding room in suburban Waukesha, Wisconsin, in late spring 2014, she picked up a pen and wrote only her first name. "She signed away her Miranda rights by printing her first name," her mother, Angie Geyser, tells Rolling Stone. Angie is now fighting to have the subsequent interrogation and confession thrown out.

Slenderman stabbing case: Morgan Geyser will be tried in Waukesha Co., trial to begin in October

    Updated at 05:45PM, February 13, 2017

WAUKESHA COUNTY -- A Waukesha County judge ruled on Monday, February 13th that accused Slenderman stabbing defendant Morgan Geyser can have a fair trial in that county. That means she will not have a change of venue as requested by her attorney. The judge also ruled that Geyser's confession in this case will stand.

Geyser's lawyer asked that the jury not be chosen from Waukesha County due to all the publicity surrounding this case -- and he asked that her statements and confession be tossed out.

Judge Michael Bohren on Monday ruled that the statement Geyser made in 2014 confessing to the Slenderman stabbing can be used in the trial. He also said Geyser's statements at age 12 were voluntary and she was read her rights -- so her confession stands.

Slenderman Stabbing Victim, Now 15, Is a ‘Strong Young Woman Excelling in School’

Nearly three years after*Payton Leutner was stabbed 19 times by two classmates when she was 12 years old, the Wisconsin teen is thriving as a high school freshman taking Advanced Placement courses.
“Today, Payton is a strong young woman who is excelling in school and doing many things that a teenager would do with her family and friends,”*says family spokesman Steve Lyons.
On Tuesday, the same day Payton turned 15, a Waukesha County judge set a trial date in her case for Oct. 2 and ruled that a*confession by suspect Morgan Geyser will be admissible. The judge also ruled there will be no change of venue, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Lyons says Payton and her*family are “pleased” with the judge’s decisions.
“We’re confident Payton and her family will see justice for this horrible, pre-meditated crime,” says Lyons, who works for the law firm Husch Blackwell in Madison, Wisconsin.

On May 31, 2013, police say Payton, then 12-years old, was lured by friends Anissa Weier and Morgan into the woods near their homes*and attacked as part of a murder plot. The girls, also 12 at the time, left Payton to die but she managed to crawl to a bike path where a passerby found her and called 911, according to investigators.
Anissa and Morgan later told police they committed the stabbing in the name of “Slenderman,” a fictional online character popular in horror stories. The case became the subject of the HBO documentary Beware the Slenderman.

The suspects are being charged as adults and have been in custody since the attack on charges of attempted first-degree intentional homicide. They have both pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect. A judge is expected to announce Anissa’s trial date at her next hearing on Feb. 20.

Slender Man stabbing suspect Anissa Weier loses court motions
Teen's confession admissible, trial to be held in Waukesha County
    Updated: 2:30 PM CST Feb 20, 2017

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

One of the two teenage suspects in the stabbing of a 6th grade classmate tied to the internet ghoul Slender Man has lost a court battle to keep her confession out of her upcoming trial.

Anissa Weier, now 15, is charged with attempted homicide for the May, 2014 stabbing of her classmate Payton Leutner. Her co-defendant, Morgan Geyser, had a similar motion dismissed one week ago.
Both defendants also filed to have a jury from a different county hear the case, but Judge Michael Bohren has now rejected both of those motions as well.
Leutner recovered from 19 stab wounds, but a doctor testified she nearly died. In questioning by Waukesha Police, Geyser and Weier said they carried out the stabbing to become "proxies" of the fictional internet-based character Slender Man, whom they told police they thought was real.
Weier's trial will begin Sept. 11, making her the first of the pair to be tried.

Sept. 11 trial date set for Anissa Weier, one of two girls charged in Slender Man stabbing

    Published 10:01 a.m. CT Feb. 20, 2017 | Updated 37 minutes ago

WAUKESHA - Anissa Weier, one of two girls charged in the Slender Man stabbing case, will stand trial starting Sept. 11, and her bids to have her statements to police blocked from the trial and a jury to be called from outside of Waukesha County were denied Monday.

Last week, Circuit Judge Michael Bohren [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], 14, and set her trial for October.

Both girls were 12 when they were charged as adults in June 2014 with the attempted first-degree intentional homicide of a sixth-grade classmate to please Slender Man, an internet boogeyman. Geyser and Weier told police they believed Slender Man would kill them or their families if they didn't kill Payton Leutner, who had to have several surgeries to survive 19 stab wounds.

Slenderman Stabbing Court Reviews Jury Questionaare
    June 6 2017
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

There was a bit of housekeeping in the Slenderman stabbing case in Waukesha County on Thursday, June 8th. A Waukesha County judge reviewed the jury questionnaires that will be used in the cases against Anissa Weier and Morgan Geyser.

    Anissa Weier
This case stems from May 2014, when Weier and Geyser, then-12-year-old girls, allegedly stabbed their friend 19 times to please the internet horror character Slenderman. Both girls are 15 years old now.
The attorneys for both girls and the prosecutors were asked to come up with questions to be mailed to potential jurors prior to their trials. This is intended to speed up the jury selection process.
Weier appeared in court for her hearing at 1:30 p.m.*Geyser appeared via video conferencing an hour later. Both are charged with attempted first degree intentional homicide.

All parties went over questions each side as come up with. The questions must be agreed upon before they are sent to potential jurors.
Also in court Thursday, the defense requested parental contact for Weier. The court granted that request -- and ordered that Weier have contact with her parents after the hearing.
Weier is scheduled to go on trial on September 11th. Geyser's trial is set to begin on October 16th.

I've never heard of sending questionnaires pertaining to a certain case being mailed to potential jurors.
Does anyone know if it's been done before, anywhere?
It's an interesting idea, saving time wise it sounds good. But I can see problems with it down the line.

Juries to be sequestered in Slender Man murder trials
    5:26 PM, Aug 10, 2017
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

The court has decided to sequester the juries for the murder trials for Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier, who are accused of stabbing a classmate to please the fictional character Slender Man.
Waukesha Circuit Court Judge Michael Bohren signed the motion to sequester the juries on Thursday, citing the, “...significant level of public interest and discussion…” of the trials.

HBO recently created a documentary on the case called “Beware the Slenderman” this spring.
The sequestered jury means the jurors will be isolated from the public without access to most media with the goal of keeping them as impartial as possible.

Teen pleads guilty to lesser charge in Slender Man attack

    Aug 21, 2017

WAUKESHA, Wis. (AP) One of two teenagers charged with repeatedly stabbing a classmate to impress a fictitious horror character called Slender Man has decided to plead guilty to a lesser charge.

Fifteen-year-old Anissa Weier pleaded guilty Monday to attempted second-degree homicide as a party to a crime, with use of a deadly weapon.

She initially faced a charge of attempted first-degree intentional homicide in the 2014 attack on Payton Leutner (LYT'-ner) in Waukesha.

The plea means her trial next month will look only at whether she is legally responsible for the crime or not guilty because of mental illness. She could face 10 years in prison if she's found guilty. If not, she'll spend three years in a mental hospital.

Weier's co-defendant, Morgan Geyser, also is due in court Monday for a status hearing.

Jurors selected for first Slender Man trial
    9/11/2017

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

The first pool of jurors for the first Slender Man trial were selected Monday afternoon.
A pool of 150 potential jurors was whittled down to 12 jurors and four alternates within six and a half hours on Monday.
They'll be sequestered by Monday evening with Anissa Weier's trial starting Tuesday morning.
A large batch of potential jurors were let go early Monday because they said taking part in the trial would be a burden, most citing sequestration as an issue. However, several were dismissed saying they couldn't be fair because they had firm opinions about mental illness and insanity pleas. One juror told the judge "I just think the kids weren’t raised right. At 12 years old, I knew what was right and wrong. And I don’t think they should get off claiming claiming something was wrong with them

Weier and Morgan Geyser were both 12 years old when they stabbed a classmate, Payton Leutner, 19 times on Memorial Day 2014. Weier told authorities that attack was meant to appease the fictional character Slender Man.
She was originally charged as an adult with attempted first-degree intentional homicide, but agreed last month to plead guilty to a lesser charge, attempted second-degree intentional homicide and faces up to 25 years in prison. As part of that agreement, Weier said prosecutors told her they'd recommend 10 years in prison at the time of her sentencing

Defense: Anissa Weier, accused of stabbing classmate, was*delusional
    Updated at 02:06PM, September 12, 2017

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

A Wisconsin girl who told investigators she helped stab a classmate was convinced the crime would protect her and her family from a fictional horror character called Slenderman, her attorney told jurors Tuesday. The defense is trying to convince jurors that Anissa Weier was suffering from a mental illness at the time of the stabbing at a Waukesha park in 2014 and therefore is not criminally responsible. The classmate was stabbed 19 times in a plot by Weier and co-defendant Morgan Geyser

Anissa’s broken mind caused her to lose touch with reality,” attorney Joseph Smith told jurors. “Anissa was under the command and control of a delusional disorder.”
Waukesha County Assistant District Attorney Kevin Osborne told jurors during opening statements that Weier and Geyser knew that they were committing a crime. Osborne says the initial plan was for Weier to stab the classmate, but Weier couldn’t do it and instead commanded Geyser to do the stabbing.

They knew this was wrong. They understood what they were doing was wrong,” Osborne said.Prosecutors charged both girls with being a party to attempted first-degree intentional homicide. Weier struck a deal with prosecutors in August in which she pleaded guilty to being a party to attempted second-degree intentional homicide, essentially acknowledging she committed all the elements of the offense.
