Harvey unloading incredible rains over Southeast Texas; Flash flood emergency in Houston

Harvey, which made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane in Southeast Texas Friday night, weakened to a tropical storm Saturday. But the flood threat was only just beginning. The storm stalled over Southeast Texas and is forecast to remain there through the middle of the week unloading tremendous rainfall.
[Harvey delivers heavy damage as it batters Texas coast]
Through Saturday evening, 6 to 12 inches of rain had already fallen over much of Southeast Texas with isolated pockets of up to 18-20 inches.

Overnight Saturday, a deluge was unfolding over Houston as an extremely intense band of rain pivoted through the area. A flash flood emergency, the highest level flood alert, was issued for large parts of the Houston area into the predawn hours. The National Weather Service warned rainfall could come down at a rate of three to four inches per hour. “This is a PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION. SEEK HIGHER GROUND NOW!,” the Weather Service said.

Pearland, Texas, which is located about 8 miles south pf Houston’s Hobby Airport, received 9.92 inches in just 90 minutes late Saturday night – a phenomenal amount of rain in such a short amount of time. Local media reported water rescues needed all over the Houston area due to stranded vehicles.
Through Thursday, most locations in Southeast, Texas can expect an additional*one to three feet*of rain.
Inland rivers*are rising and the storm’s first flood evacuation orders have been issued for residents near the San Bernard and Brazos rivers. Specifically, officials in Fort Bend County have issued a mandatory evacuation for residents in low-lying areas. This is the same region that was flooded by persistent rain in 2016.

On Personal note:: I use to live San Antonio in South Texas for 12 years we use to go to Port Aransas for vacation all the time just east of Corpus Christie it is complete devasted now along with Rockport near there just so sad Praying for them! My daughter lives in suburb of Dallas and they haven't gotten any rain from this storm yet!! Thank God

Rainfall from Harvey Could Reach 50 Inches in Spots, Highest Ever Recorded in Texas; Catastrophic Flooding to Continue for Days
    Aug 28 2017 09:00 AM EDT

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

Tropical Storm Harvey is drifting back into the Gulf of Mexico and will meander*near the upper Texas coast the next few days, bringing more torrential rainfall to the flooded Houston metro area, piling onto*record-breaking, catastrophic flooding.
Localized storm total rain amounts of up to 50 inches are not out of the question once Harvey's rain is finished later this week. This may end up being one of the worst flood disasters in U.S. history

Still Days of Heavy Rain Ahead
The heaviest rain Monday, so far, has been in far east Texas and southwest Louisiana. Radar rainfall rates of 5 to 6 inches per hour were estimated in this band. Fourteen inches of rain flooded numerous homes near Hamshire, Texas. Water was also entering homes in Vidor, Texas, Monday morning.
Rain from Harvey is also continuing over parts of central Texas, and is extending into much of Louisiana and parts of Mississippi and southern Arkansas.

The tropical storm is currently caught in between two areas of high pressure*and, without another weather system to scoop Harvey up, it will be stuck for the next few days before finally tracking north later this week.
The National Hurricane Center is not expecting significant strengthening of Harvey while it's briefly off the Gulf Coast, so the main concern should remain additional heavy rainfall.

    Truly Historic Hurricane
Harvey made landfall Friday night near Rockport, a town of less than 10,000 people and about 30 miles up the Texas coast from Corpus Christi.
Harvey is*this nation's first major*(Category 3*or stronger) hurricane landfall since Hurricane Wilma struck South Florida in October 2005, an almost 12-year run.*A*multi-day deluge of the Texas Gulf Coast with*catastrophic*and*life-threatening flooding and destructive winds could leave areas*uninhabitable for an extended period of time, the National Weather Service has warned.

Dallas preps 'mega-shelter' as Texas braces for more rain
    August 28, 2017

Harvey is no longer a hurricane, but life-threatening flooding continued in and around Houston on Sunday night as citizens with boats assisted authorities in search and rescue efforts.
Flooding from Tropical Storm Harvey is overburdening resources in the country's fourth-largest city, prompting authorities to call on volunteers with watercraft for help in rescuing those trapped in homes and buildings.
An immediate respite from Harvey's wrath seems unlikely to come. The National Weather Service calls the flooding "unprecedented," and warns things may become more dire if a forecasted record-breaking 50 inches of rain does fall on parts of Texas in coming days. In anticipation of a worsening situation, Dallas is turning its main convention center into a "mega-shelter" that can host 5,000 evacuees.

The rainfall threatens to exacerbate an already dangerous situation, as Harvey's rains have left many east Texas rivers and bayous swollen to their banks or beyond

    Harrowing tales from Houston
"The breadth and intensity of this rainfall are beyond anything experienced before," the weather service said. "Catastrophic flooding is now underway and expected to continue for days."
The storm killed two people in Texas, authorities said, and the death toll will likely rise. More than 1,000 people were rescued overnight, and Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner warned that some 911 calls are going unanswered as operators "give preference to life-threatening calls."

    Here are the latest developments:
A woman who drove her vehicle into high water in Houston was killed, and fire killed a man in Rockport.
Several states and the US military are sending emergency workers and equipment to Texas. In Harris County, though, authorities are having issues mobilizing those resources. "We've requested boats, all the things that would normally happen in a well-planned response to an event like this, but they can't get here," Harris County Judge Ed Emmett said.
Dallas announced its plans to open a "mega-shelter" capable of accommodating 5,000 evacuees at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center. County officials, charitable groups and local hospitals are working to open the shelter by Tuesday morning.
While Turner warned the rain could exacerbate flooding for "four to five days," Federal Emergency Management Agency Director Brock Long said he expects his agency "is going to be there for years."
The Houston Independent School District has canceled school for the week.

Houston's George Bush Intercontinental and William P. Hobby airports are closed until further notice, officials said. Corpus Christi International reopened at 4 p.m. Sunday, officials said. Jack Brooks Regional Airport in Beaumont, Ellington Airport in Houston, Mustang Beach Airport in Port Aransas and McCampbell-Porter Airport in Aransas Pass are also temporarily closed, the Federal Aviation Administration says.
Ben Taub Hospital, which houses a Level I trauma center, is being evacuated after flooding in the basement "disrupted the power source," Emmet said.
316,000 customers have lost electricity, Gov. Greg Abbott said

Family members say six people have drowned in floodwaters in northeast Houston on Monday. Four siblings under the age of 16 and two elderly people drowned. The elderly people were the great grandparents of the children, according to family members. Relatives say all six are presumed dead at this time. Their bodies have not yet been recovered. We are working to gather more information on what happened. Check KHOU.com and KHOU 11 News on Facebook and Twitter for updates.

Family of 6 believed to have drowned inside van while trying to escape Harvey floods

    Aug 28, 2017

HOUSTON - A family of six is believed to have died after drowning in a white van Sunday afternoon while trying to escape the floods of Hurricane Harvey, relatives tell KHOU 11 News. It is thus far the single deadliest incident resulting from the storm.

The victims include four children (all 16 or younger) and their great-grandparents. The driver of the vehicle (the children's great-uncle) managed to escape before the van went under water.

Family members tell us the victims are Manuel Saldivar, 84, his wife Belia, 81, Daisy Saldivar, 6, Xavier Saldivar, 8, Dominic Saldivar, 14, Devy Saldivar, 16.

According to witnesses, the family was trying to get to higher ground when the van they were traveling in hit high floodwaters after crossing a bridge on Green River Road in Greens Bayou.

The van was swept up in the current, and the driver was able to crawl out. He told the children inside to try and get out through the back door, but they were unable to. According to family members, the van quickly sank with everyone inside.

The driver was able to hang onto a tree limb and escape.

Witnesses say there were first responders in the area, but there was not enough time to perform a viable rescue operation.

Harvey flood fears expand to Louisiana as Texas braces for more feet of rain
    August 29,2017

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

Rescue crews raced to rush people and families to safety Monday night in the Houston area -- as Louisiana braced for flooding of its own from the megastorm known as Harvey.
Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards warned people in his state that “the worst is likely to come for us here.”
Meanwhile,*floodwaters reached the rooflines of single-story homes in Houston and people could be heard pleading for help from inside. The nation's fourth-largest city remained largely paralyzed by one of the largest downpours in U.S. history. And there was no relief in sight from the storm that spun into Texas as a Category 4 hurricane, then parked itself over the Gulf Coast. Nearly 2 more feet of rain is expected on top of the 30-plus inches in some areas of the state.

Harvey “does remain a tropical storm and it’s going to drop an awful lot of rain” on Louisiana, Edwards said at a news conference Monday. “We do have a long way to go with this particular storm.”
“Harvey's circulation is crawling eastward and the center of the storm is forecast to track through the state of Louisiana later this week,” said Fox News Meteorologist Janice Dean. “The steady flow of winds over the Gulf will put Louisiana in line for a steady stream of heavy rain, including cities like Baton Rouge, Lake Charles and New Orleans.”
Southwestern Louisiana could get 15-20 inches of rain from Harvey. Flash floods warnings went into effect through Thursday as areas along the coast faced tropical storm warnings.

'Get out now!' Levee breaches south of Houston as flooding intensifies
    Aug 29, 2017

The catastrophic flooding that has already swallowed thousands of homes in Texas could get worse after a levee breached south of Houston.
"Get out now!" Brazoria County officials tweeted Tuesday.
The levee breached after inland waterways rapidly swelled to major flood stage, county spokeswoman Sharon Trower said.

"The Brazos River is being pounded, and all of that water is coming down from the tributaries and creeks into the river," she said. "All the roads around us are flooded. We don't have any evacuation routes to tell people to take."

Brazoria County sits between the Gulf of Mexico and Houston, which remains the site of Harvey's most appalling devastation. Houston police have rescued more than 3,500 people from the floodwaters, Police Chief Art Acevedo said.
That number is almost certain to keep rising, as countless residents remain trapped in their deluged homes three days after Hurricane Harvey struck.
"Every passing hour, more boats are getting into the water," Acevedo said Tuesday. "This is a catastrophic event."
Four people have died from the calamitous storm, and with another landfall expected, the devastation could intensify.

Photo Of Dog Carrying Bag Of Food During Harvey Becomes Symbol Of Resilience

    Aug 29, 2017

SINTON, Texas (CBS) — A small town near Houston is showing its fighting spirit in the face of Hurricane Harvey and a symbol of their resilience is going viral.

A photo captures a dog named Otis carrying a bag of dog food after dashing from his porch during the high winds and heavy rain in Sinton.

Experts say the conditions could have cost an elderly dog like Otis his life, but he is a fighter.

Salvador Segovia, the dog’s owner, said Otis is showing the people of Texas that they will make it through this.

“To my surprise, here comes Otis with a bag of dog food in his mouth, a full five-pound bag of dog food in his mouth,” said Segovia. “He’s telling the people in Texas we will survive.”

31 dogs rescued from Texas kennel, officers say owner left them behind

(KRIV) - Despite the owner reporting all animals had been rescued, 31 dogs left behind at a Texas kennel have been saved thanks to a county sheriff's office.

On Monday, Aug. 28, the Chambers County Sheriff's Office reported that all animals had been rescued from the Tall Tails kennel in Hankamer via airboat, along with kennel owner Kevin Miller.

The following evening, Chambers County Sherriff Brian Hawthorne reported another 31 dogs were rescued. When Miller was evacuated on the last airboat trip from the property, he stated no other animals needed rescuing. But Miller’s partner began posting on Facebook that animals had been left behind.

Two groups volunteered airboats to the sheriff’s office for the rescue mission so the office could use theirs to continue to rescue Chambers County citizens.

“Sheriff's Office Detectives that were assisting in the rescue identified what appeared to be numerous fighting dogs and that Miller appeared to care more about receiving PayPal donations than he did about the dogs or his imperiled neighbors, waiting to be rescued,” the office wrote in a post.

I am so happy that all animals are being rescued as well as the people. It was heartbreaking watching the news during Hurricane Katrina when pets weren't allowed to evacuate with their owners.

Doctor canoes through Texas floodwaters to perform surgery

    Aug 29, 2017

    HOUSTON, Texas --
A Houston doctor braved the Hurricane Harvey floodwaters in a canoe to make his way to the hospital so he could perform surgery on a teen suffering from a painful, and potentially permanent, condition.

Dr. Stephen Kimmel's own home in Dickinson was beginning to flood on Saturday when he received word that a 16-year-old boy needed immediate surgery at Clear Lake Regional Medical Center. Kimmel hopped in his car and began making his way to the hospital but was stopped by rising waters. Two volunteer firefighters with a canoe came to his aid and the three paddled towards the hospital in the dark against heavy currents.

Kimmel walked the last leg of the journey, almost a mile, through waist-deep water to make it to the hospital.

"Sometimes you have to do whatever it takes," Kimmel said in a press release. "This young man's life would have been changed for the worse forever if we hadn't been able to perform surgery when we did. In the end, it all turned out very well."

I agree, that was absolutely horrible.

I watch Pitbulls and Parolees, their rescue Villalobos still has a couple of Katrina dogs I think. Or they did a few years ago.
