    Hurricane Irma

    Hurricane Irma's track shifts south

    Sept 4, 2017

The focus is squarely on Hurricane Irma this week, a major hurricane heading for the northern Caribbean Islands and Bahamas over the next five days.

As of 11 a.m. Monday, Irma has maximum sustained winds of 120 mph, making it a major Category 3 hurricane.

The storm is moving to the west southwest at 14 mph, and central pressure is at 944 millibars.

Irma continues to look quite impressive on satellite imagery this afternoon, and further strengthening is expected as the storm remains in a very favorable environment.

Beyond five days, the forecast remains a bit uncertain. However, a U.S. landfall appears more likely than last week, and everyone from the Gulf coast of Florida to the Carolina coast need to monitor this storm with vigilance.

There are still a number of scenarios on the table for Irma after five days.

IF we saw any kind of impacts from Irma in Southwest Florida, it wouldn't be until late this weekend, so there are still several days to monitor the storm.

Now is the time to just be prepared, not to panic.

Florida governor declares state of emergency ahead of Hurricane Irma: report

    Sept 4, 2017

Florida Governor Rick Scott Monday (Sept. 4) declared a state of emergency to begin preparations in the state in case Hurricane Irma makes landfall, according to CBS Miami.

The storm reached Category 4 strength Monday afternoon.

Scott issued the order after the National Hurricane Weather's latest advisory urged officials to begin warning south Florida of potential storm effects. The order states forecast models predict Irma will "travel up the entire spine of Florida" Saturday.

"Hurricane Irma poses a severe threat to the entire State of Florida and requires that timely precautions are taken to protect the communities, critical infrastructure, and general welfare of this state," Scott's order stated.

Here's a message from Beaufort County Emergency Management Office sent out last night.
    Good afternoon everyone,
There has been increased public discussion about Irma this weekend. Below you will find the latest from the NWS Forecast Office in Charleston this afternoon. I have been talking with other Emergency Management directors along the coast this afternoon. Obviously we are all paying close attention to the storm. But PLEASE do not believe all you read on FACEBOOK. There are already dire rumors circulating that are totally unsubstantiated and intentionally misleading. Below is the true situation.
Now is the time to begin THINKING and PLANNING AHEAD.
    1. If you do not have a personal, family and business plan for any type of disaster, now is the time to complete it.
    2. If you have personal or business lessons learned from a previous storm, and have not taken mitigating action, now is the time to do so.
    3. If/When an evacuation was to be ordered, where would you take your family? Do you have a location picked out? Do you know the route? Have you thought about medicine prescription renewals? Have you thought about pets?
    4. During Matthew, there were 144 identified on-line sources putting out "weather information". Many of them had bad scoop. Please make sure that your personal sources of information are reliable. Make sure that the information you are getting is appropriate to Beaufort County.

Hurricane Irma strengthens to Category 5: Puerto Rico, Florida brace
    9:07 AM ET, Tue September 5, 2017

Hurricane Irma has strengthened into an "extremely dangerous" Category 5 storm, the National Hurricane Center said, threatening to slam into northeastern Caribbean islands and Puerto Rico by Wednesday before possibly taking aim at the US mainland.
Irma was churning Tuesday morning in the Atlantic about 270 miles east of Antigua and Barbuda, heading west with maximum sustained winds of 175 mph -- well above the 157 mph threshold for a Category 5 -- the hurricane center said.
The storm's forecast track currently has it near or over Antigua and Barbuda by late Tuesday or early Wednesday, and the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico on Wednesday afternoon.

As Irma approaches, Florida AG Pam Bondi opens price-gouging hotline
    Sept 5, 2017

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

As Hurricane Irma’s winds reached 140 mph,*Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi on Monday activated the state’s price gouging hotline.
While economists debate the wisdom of price controls, Florida law prohibits “extreme increases” in prices of food, water, hotel rooms, ice, gas, lumber and other items in high demand during an official emergency.*
Most days, businessmen who jack up prices to reflect soaring demand are lauded as savvy entrepreneurs.*
In the days during and after a hurricane, though, a merchant who charges $5 for a gallon of gas or $100 for a sheet of plywood is derided as a shameless profiteer.*

How Georgia could be impacted by Hurricane Irma
    Sept 5,2017

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

The latest forecast for Hurricane Irma indicates Georgia could feel the effects of the category 5 storm beginning early next week.
As of 11 a.m. Tuesday, the hurricane is making its way toward the Leeward Islands with maximum winds clocking at 180 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center.
“This is going to be a massive storm, bearing down on the*Caribbean*right now,"*11Alive*Meteorologist*Chesley*McNeil said, adding the effects of Irma will be felt in the islands starting Tuesday night.

Multiple hurricane models predict the storm will remain at category 5 strength until it reaches the southern tip of the Bermuda islands when experts suggest the storm could then weaken to category 4. Forecasts suggest Irma will move adjacent to Miami and south Florida by late Saturday into Sunday before lifting into the north. *
McNeil said extended models forecast the storm system moving north with heavy rains and winds in south Georgia as early as Sunday night. The Atlanta metro area could feel the system's effects late Monday and Tuesday of next week.
“If this storm moves up our way, it will encounter an area of high pressure,” McNeil said. “The two will come together and form a gradient that will produce some very gusty winds for us.’
McNeil cautioned winds of that caliber could increase the risk of downed trees and power lines.
"We have to watch out because we've had a wet summer. The soil is very loose," McNeil said. "Any type of wind of that caliber moving very slowly will knock over some treads that will lead to power outages in our area."

Hurricane Irma is a 'potentially catastrophic' Category 5 storm
By Nicole Chavez and Jason Hanna, CNN

Updated 2:02 PM ET, Tue September 5, 2017

A "potentially catastrophic" Hurricane Irma is roaring toward northeastern Caribbean islands as a Category 5 storm, the National Hurricane Center said, threatening to slam into Antigua, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico by Wednesday before possibly taking aim at the US mainland.
Irma was churning Tuesday afternoon in the Atlantic about 180 miles east of Antigua and Barbuda, heading west with maximum sustained winds of 185 mph -- well above the 157 mph threshold for a Category 5 -- the hurricane center said.
The storm's forecast track currently has it near or over Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts and Nevis, and Anguilla by late Tuesday or early Wednesday, and the British and US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico on Wednesday afternoon.

Preparations to protect life and property in those areas "should be rushed to completion," the hurricane center said in a 2 p.m. ET advisory.

With Harvey's havoc on their minds, Floridians brace for Irma
"We could see storm surges of 7 to 11 feet -- that's certainly life-threatening -- and very, very heavy flooding rainfall" in the far northeastern Caribbean islands as well winds that could cause catastrophic damage near the eye wall, the hurricane center's Michael Brennan said.

Computer models show the system eventually possibly heading near the Dominican Republic, Haiti and the Turks and Caicos Islands on Thursday into Friday, and Cuba on Friday into Saturday -- and potentially turning north toward Florida by the weekend.
While Irma's exact path is uncertain, Florida -- where storm-wary shoppers were standing in long lines outside some stores Tuesday -- is bracing for the storm.
And the state's Monroe County, which includes the Florida Keys, says it will order visitors to evacuate by sunrise Wednesday, and that it expects to announce an evacuation for residents soon.

I like to watch The Weather Channel and they have a new DR. Her name is Dr. Erika Navarro and she's really good at what she does. Some of the men Dr's sputter around but not her. She gets right at it.

Aaaa no wonder I like her so much; Her Ph.D. thesis focused on hurricanes, and how changes that take place during the daylight and evening hours affect their overall intensity.

One of my high school friends lives in Tampa but she and her husband are currently back in our home town in MS. She said he wants to go back to board up the house. She said she is talking with his daughter who has agreed to do that for them so I'm hoping they stay right where they are. Like me they are older and don't have any business going into a storm.

I am in upstate SC but you never know about these tropical storms - tornadoes, flooding, etc. , so I have bought extra water and a few extra things just to have on hand, canned meat, fruits and veggies, crackers, cheese = things that can be eaten w/o cooking. Also, stocked up on doggie and cat food.

Praying Irma takes a turn back out into the ocean.

Florida Keys evacuations readied ahead of Irma

    Sept 5, 2017

    MIAMI —

Officials in the Florida Keys are gearing up to get tourists and residents out of the possible path of Hurricane Irma.

Monroe County spokeswoman Cammy Clark says in a news release that a mandatory evacuation for tourists will begin at sunrise Wednesday. An evacuation plan for residents is also under way but a timetable hasn't been determined.

Clark says government offices, parks and schools will close and there will be no shelters in Monroe County. The county's three hospitals are also beginning evacuation plans.

U.S. 1 is only route in and out of the island chain off the southern peninsula of Florida.

Clark says residents and tourists should begin filling their tanks with fuel to prepare to drive to the mainland.

I just can't believe this is happening again so soon after Harvey to the US. No, your friends need to stay where they are and let his daughter board up the home. It is too dangerous.
