Irma Lashes at Puerto Rico, Leaves Tiny Barbuda Devastated

    Sept 6, 2017

Hurricane Irma lashed Puerto Rico with heavy rain and powerful winds Wednesday, leaving more than 600,000 people without power as authorities struggled to get aid to small Caribbean islands already devastated by the historic storm.

Florida rushed to prepare for a possible direct hit on the Miami area by the Category 5 storm with potentially catastrophic 185 mph winds.

Nearly every building on the island of Barbuda was damaged when the eye of the storm passed almost directly overhead early Wednesday and about 60 percent of the island's roughly 1,400 people were left homeless, Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister Gaston Browne told The Associated Press.

"Either they were totally demolished or they would have lost their roof," Browne said after returning to Antigua from a plane trip to the neighboring island. "It is just really a horrendous situation."

He said roads and telecommunications systems were destroyed and recovery will take months, if not years. A 2-year-old child was killed as a family tried to escape a damaged home during the storm, Browne told the AP.

Serious damage was also reported on St. Martin, an island split between French and Dutch control. France sent emergency food and water rations there and to the French island of St. Bart's, where Irma ripped off roofs and knocked out all electricity. Dutch marines who flew to St. Martin and two other Dutch islands hammered by Irma reported extensive damage but no deaths or injuries.

By early Wednesday evening, the center of the storm was 40 miles northwest of St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands and 55 miles northeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and heading west-northwest at 16 mph (26 kph).
More than 600,000 Puerto Ricans were without power and nearly 50,000 without water, the U.S. territory's emergency management agency said. Fourteen hospitals were using generators after losing power, and trees and light poles were strewn across roads.

The tiny island of Culebra reported sustained winds of 88 mph and wind gusts of 110 mph.

The U.S. National Weather Service said Puerto Rico had not seen a hurricane of Irma's magnitude since Hurricane San Felipe in 1928, which killed a total of 2,748 people in Guadeloupe, Puerto Rico and Florida.

Puerto Rico's public power company has cut back on staff and maintenance amid a decade-long economic crisis and the agency's director warned that some areas could be without power from four to six months because the infrastructure has already deteriorated so badly.

Robert De Niro Vows to Help Barbuda Rebuild After Irma's Destruction

Robert De Niro's got plans to open a luxury resort on the tiny island of Barbuda, but first ... he's got to help the people there recover from Hurricane Irma's destruction.

The Caribbean island north of Antigua was ravaged by the storm Wednesday -- reportedly 95 percent of buildings were damaged or destroyed -- and went completely off the grid for hours as high winds knocked out power. It's been so bad people haven't even been able to send photos of the aftermath.

De Niro's vowed to help the community out, saying his Paradise Found Nobu Resort team will work with the Barbuda Council and the entire community to rebuild "what nature has taken away from us."

The actor, along with billionaire, James Packer, are developing the resort ... but obviously have more work to do now.

Hurricane Irma price gouging: Bondi rips ‘disgusting’ $100 water charge

    Sept 6, 2017

Florida’s attorney general slammed as “sickening” Wednesday evening more than 1,500 reported incidents of price-gouging with Category 5 Hurricane Irma bearing down on the state, including delivery charges of $100 for a case of water.

“You’ve got vendors trying to trick people,” Pam Bondi said.”It’s sickening and disgusting and we’re not going to have it.”

Retailer Amazon has suspended 12 third-party vendors associated with questionable fees, including a seemingly reasonably-priced case of water that came with a surprise delivery fee of $100, Bondi said.

    “Come on,” Bondi said.

She said she has been in touch with Amazon among other firms and praised their cooperation in cracking down on abuses.

“It not just about money being taken from people, it’s about water and commodities our people need to survive,” Bondi said.

The majority of complaints are coming from Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, she said. Many deal with food, water and ice prices, and others with gasoline.

Florida Democratic U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson said he urged federal authorities to help ensure gas is available for people trying to evacuate.

“As a growing number of Floridians are being ordered to evacuate, we need to ensure that these evacuees have access to the gasoline they need to escape this approaching storm,” Nelson wrote in a letter to Federal Emergency Management Agency administrator Brock Long. “I strongly urge FEMA to use all available resources and authorities to assist those evacuating this potentially catastrophic storm, including pre-positioning fuel supplies near and along evacuation routes so those running low on fuel can obtain an emergency supply to get them out of harm’s way.”

Some complaints have addressed high air fares, Bondi said.

Delta said it will cap fares from Florida and other affected regions at $399 for direct nonstop flights, and American was also capping fares on flights from five South Florida airports and waiving pet fees, Bondi said.

State law defines price gouging as a “gross disparity” between the current price and the average for the previous 30 days, but gives no strict statistical definition of how much is too much. Though there have been prosecuted cases or settlements after past storms, the broader effect frequently amounts to deterrence — making individual businesses think twice about jacking up prices.

Thursday: Hurricane Irma continues easterly track after devastating Caribbean (w/video)

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Hurricane Irma has maintained its intensity overnight Thursday, continuing on a track that could lead to a catastrophic strike on Florida.
Irma left at least 10 dead and thousands homeless amid a swathe of smashed buildings and uprooted trees, cutting a path of devastation across the northern Caribbean on Thursday.
Speaking on French radio France Info, French Interior Minister Gerard Collomb said the death toll in Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthelemy could be higher because rescue teams have yet to finish their inspection of the islands.
"The reconnaissance will really start at daybreak," Collomb said.

    CURRENT CONDITIONS

The most potent Atlantic Ocean hurricane ever, Irma weakened only slightly as of Thursday at 5 a.m. and remained a powerful Category 5 storm with winds of 180 mph (285 kph), according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.
It is located about 95 miles north of the Dominican Republic and moving west-northwest at 17 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Forecast models continue to keep the storm mainly tracking along the east coast of Florida

Forecasters Irma would remain at Category 4 or 5 for the next day or two as passes just to the north of the Dominican Republic and Haiti on Thursday, nears the Turks & Caicos and parts of the Bahamas by Thursday night and skirts Cuba on Friday night into Saturday. It will then likely head north toward Florida.

    FORECAST FOR FLORIDA, EAST COAST

The storm is expected to hit Florida sometime Sunday, and Gov. Rick Scott said he planned to activate 7,000 National Guard soldiers by Friday. He warned that Irma is "bigger, faster and stronger" than Hurricane Andrew, which wiped out entire neighborhoods in south Florida 25 years ago.
Experts worried that Irma could rake the entire Florida east coast from Miami to Jacksonville and then head into Savannah, Georgia, and the Carolinas, striking highly populated and developed areas.
"This could easily be the most costly storm in U.S. history, which is saying a lot considering what just happened two weeks ago," said Brian McNoldy, a hurricane researcher at the University of Miami.
Forecasters say hurricane watches may be issued for Florida within the next day

Hurricane Irma kills 9 in Caribbean islands as Florida awaits storm
    9:10 AM ET, Thu September 7, 2017

Outer bands of the unusually powerful Hurricane Irma battered parts of the Dominican Republic and Haiti on Thursday morning, threatening serious flooding a day after leaving severe destruction and at least nine dead across a string of Caribbean islands to the east.
Irma -- a Category 5 storm that has kept sustained winds of 180 mph longer than any other on record -- knocked out electricity a day earlier to more than 1 million customers in Puerto Rico as it churned off the US territory, and devastated smaller islands, including Barbuda and the British Virgin Islands.
Irma could next hit the Atlantic archipelagos of the Turks and Caicos and the Bahamas -- and by the weekend may reach a nervous Florida, where people have flocked to stores to prepare and some communities have ordered evacuations.

If you decide to stay in the Florida Keys, you are on your own," said Roman Gastesi, administrator of Monroe County, which ordered everyone off the small islands off the state's southern coast ahead of the storm's anticipated approach.
Irma on Wednesday left at least nine people dead, including six on St. Martin, two on St. Bart's and one in Barbuda. The latter is barely habitable, with nearly all its buildings damaged, the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda said.
On Thursday morning, Irma's powerful core was moving off the mountainous northern coasts of the Dominican Republic and Haiti, and could leave up to 15 inches of rain -- amounts that could trigger dangerous flooding and mudslides, the National Hurricane Center said.

PEEPS! Advice from someone who's been through many a hurricane: EMPTY YOUR DISHWASHER AND PUT ANYTHING YOU WANT TO PRESERVE IN THERE. It's waterproof and secured to cabinets so it's more likely to survive a storm. TELL YOUR FRIENDS.

This is one we have used.

Put waters and drinks in washer and fill with ice. Drinks stayed cold for days! And water just ran out

Hurricane watch issued for South Florida ahead of Irma, governor says fuel
    shortages 'top priority'
    Sept 7 2017

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

A hurricane watch was issued Thursday morning as Irma, a Category 5 storm with 175-mph winds edged closer to South Florida, as preparations for the storm have already left some of the state's gas stations dry, a crisis which the governor said has become a "top priority."
Florida Gov. Rick Scott said at a news conference he will be talking with fuel distributors later in the day about the concerns.

    Expand / Collapse

"I have been very clear to the retailers," Scott said. "We have to get the fuel as fast as we can out so people can evacuate."
The governor is asking the federal government, including the Environmental Protection Agency and White House, to waive restrictions to get as much fuel to Florida as possible before Irma nears.
We know fuel is very important, and we are devoting every state resource to this," Scott said. "I know this has to be very frustrating, and we won't stop working on this."

Once fuel arrives in Florida, Scott said another priority is to make sure it gets to gas stations. Officials plan to have escort services using police to get gas trucks to and from ports to stations.
Scott also recommended people use the GasBuddy app to find what stations still have gas, and that people should "only take the fuel you need."

The National Hurricane Center said hurricane-force winds extended 50 miles from Irma’s center and tropical storm-force winds extended 175 miles. Irma has killed at least 13 people as it has tore through the Caribbean.
Even as current models show the storm going along Florida's East Coast, Scott said the state's West Coast will still have hurricane conditions.
"Look at the size of this storm," Scott said. "It's huge."
"Regardless of which coast you live on, be prepared to evacuate," he said

Traffic nightmare as 500K people told to leave Florida

    Sept 7, 2017

MIAMI (AP) — The race to flee Hurricane Irma became a marathon nightmare for many as more than a half-million people were ordered to leave South Florida on Thursday.

With the storm barreling toward the tip of Florida for perhaps a catastrophic blow this weekend, normally quick trips turned into daylong journeys on crowded highways amid a constant search for gasoline and lodging. Airline seats out of Florida were in short supply as well.

Mari and Neal Michaud loaded their two children and dog into their small sport-utility vehicle and left their home near Cocoa Beach about 10 a.m., bound for an impromptu vacation in Washington, D.C. Using a phone app and calls to search for fuel along the way, they finally arrived at a convenience store that had gasoline nearly five hours later.

The 60-mile trip up Interstate 95 should have taken an hour, said Mari Michaud.

"There was no gas and it's gridlock. People are stranded on the sides of the highway," she said. "It's 92 degrees out and little kids are out on the grass on the side of the road. No one can help them."

The National Hurricane Center issued a hurricane watch for the Keys and parts of South Florida, including some of the Miami metropolitan area of 6 million people. It was the first of perhaps many watches and warnings along the Southeastern coast over the next several days as forecasters warn the storm could hit anywhere from Florida to North Carolina.

As people along the Atlantic coast anxiously watched the behemoth, Irma battered the northern Caribbean, killing at least seven people and leaving thousands homeless after destroying buildings and uprooting trees.

At least 31,000 people fled the Florida Keys, which could begin seeing wind and rain from Irma as early as Friday night, Gov. Rick Scott said. He noted the size of the powerful Category 5 storm, and told residents not to become complacent.

"It is wider than our entire state and could cause major and life-threatening impacts from coast to coast. Regardless of which coast you live on, be prepared to evacuate," Scott said.

NASA secured Kennedy Space Center and SpaceX launched an unmanned rocket for an experimental flight. Kennedy closed its doors to all nonessential staff and a crew of about 120 people will ride out the storm on site.

Most of the critical buildings at Kennedy are designed to withstand gusts of up to 135 mph (220 kph). Irma's wind could exceed that if it reaches Cape Canaveral.

With winds that peaked at 185 mph (300 kph), Irma was the most powerful hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic.

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal ordered evacuations for all areas east of Interstate 95, including the city of Savannah, and authorized about 5,000 National Guard members to help with response and recovery.

Noel Marsden said he, his girlfriend, her son and their dog left Pembroke Pines north of Miami with plans to ride out Irma in Savannah, only to find the city was also shutting down because of Irma. Marsden isn't sure where they'll all end up.

"I've got a buddy in Atlanta and a buddy in Charlotte. We'll wind up one of those two places because there are not hotels, I can tell you that," he said.

The last time Georgia was struck by a hurricane of force Category 3 or higher happened in 1898.

Irma's eventual path and Florida's fate depends on when and how sharp the powerful hurricane takes a right turn, National Weather Service Director Louis Uccellini said.

"It has become more likely that Irma will make landfall in southern Florida as a dangerous major hurricane," the Hurricane Center said in a forecast discussion Thursday afternoon.

The last Category 5 storm to hit Florida was Andrew in 1992. Its winds topped 165 mph (265 kph), killing 65 people and inflicting $26 billion in damage. It was at the time the most expensive natural disaster in U.S. history.
