Mexico quake hit on the anniversary of a 1985 temblor that killed thousands

    Sept 19, 2017

The earthquake struck at the height of morning rush hour, toppling buildings, igniting fires and leaving residents panicked in the streets.

It happened 32 years ago, exactly. On Sept. 19, 1985, a 8.0 magnitude earthquake struck off the southwest coast of Mexico, jolting the capital city and small towns throughout the country. At least 4,200 people died — possibly many more — and hundreds of thousands were left homeless.

Chaos again erupted in Mexico on Tuesday, the anniversary of the 1985 temblor, when a 7.1 earthquake hit the country, killing at least several dozen.

The irony was not lost, nor the sense of remembered panic, as frightened residents in Mexico City raced out of their homes and stood in the streets, terrified to go back inside.

The earthquake in 1985 hit Mexico City especially hard. At General Hospital, near the city’s central core, more than 250 people died when a tower on the building collapsed.

At the time, President Miguel de la Madrid went on the radio to appeal for calm.

“Above all, the first priority is to save human lives,” de la Madrid told listeners. “Unfortunately, there appear to be many dead. All of the hospitals are on a state of alert to take care of the injured. The army is on a state of alert.”

Howard L. Lester, an amateur radio operator in Schenectady, N.Y., reported that he had monitored a transmission between a Mexico City operator and another in Tucson, Ariz.

Speaking in English, the Mexico City operator said:

“This is no joke. … We have only one radio channel left. It's a government channel. We're trying to get it working so we can tell the world what is happening.”

WOW how eerie is that this earthquake hit on the exact same day 25 years later!

So awful. Death toll keeps rising. Pray for all lost and missing. And for those injured, without homes. What destruction and tragedy. Boy, there are so many disasters happening. frightening, really.

Meet Frida, the canine hero of Mexico's deadly earthquake

    Sept 21, 2017

(Meredith) -- After a deadly earthquake struck Mexico, killing hundreds, the rescue effort began in earnest. People were trapped underneath collapsed buildings. Frida, a rescue dog with Mexico’s Navy, went to work.

First, a khaki padded harness went on, then booties to protect her paws from debris and rubble, then a pair of sturdy goggles. Her trainer attached a leash to her collar, and they’re off. Time to rescue some people.

It’s hard work, but Frida has a knack for it. So far, Frida has rescued 52 people trapped after natural disasters in Mexico. She’s already saved 12 from Tuesday’s earthquake.

She’s become something of a hero in Mexico in the aftermath of the latest deadly earthquake.

Mexico hit by 6.1 magnitude earthquake Saturday

    Sept 23, 2017

A 6.1 magnitude earthquake shook southern Mexico on Saturday morning, the US Geological Survey said, rattling a country still coming to grips with the devastation from two stronger temblors earlier this month.

Saturday's quake was centered in Oaxaca state, about 275 miles southeast of Mexico City. Roughly speaking, the epicenter was between the centers of this month's two more violent Mexico earthquakes -- the 7.1 magnitude temblor that hit Tuesday closer to the capital, and the 8.1 magnitude quake that struck September 8 off the country's southern Pacific coast, near Chiapas state.

Mexico City did not immediately appear to sustain significant damage in Saturday's quake, the country's office of the secretary of public security said.

The two earlier quakes killed hundreds of people and turned buildings into dust and debris in parts of Mexico. At least 298 people have been reported killed in Tuesday's quake; nearly 100 were reported killed in the September 8 temblor.

Some of the people believed to be buried alive at Alvaro Obregon 286.
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ] … #MexicoEarthquake @FOXLA

Behind every report of a missing person is a name, a story, a family.
Today I met many families who shared their heartache with me.
These are some of their stories.
    ----
Paulino Estrada Villegas is a 37-year-old accountant, husband and father of two who worked at Alvaro Obregon 286 in Colonia Condesa.
Paulino was a family man and what a loving family he has.
    Paulino is loved.
    Paulino is missing.
    ----
22-year-old Julio Cesar Molina was just starting his professional career and was also working in the same building as a junior accountant.
On Saturday he went out with his friend Paco and they shared a night of laughs.
    Julio Cesar is loved.
    Julio Cesar is missing.
    -----
Brandon Lee Cerda is also an accountant.
His cousin shared her phone with me and together we looked at his pictures.
Brandon was always smiling and being silly.
    "He's a really happy guy isn't he?" I asked.
"Si. Si lo es" she responded thru tears. "Yes he is."
    Brandon is loved.
    Brandon is missing.
    ----
26-year-old Gustavo Alejandro Nuñez Salinas also worked in that building.
His heartbroken cousin shared this picture with me.
    Gustavo is loved.
    Gustavo is missing.

I saw last night on the new that they pulled a doggie out of the rubble - in good condition.

I wish they could get to those people.
Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: yet I say unto you, that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

That is hopeful but they need to reach them very quickly. Hopefully there are survivors just waiting to get out!
